There has been some research completed recently about scarce resources of which many people might find surprising.

Australia is already over-populated, not to mention the driest inhabited continent in the world with water restrictions in all major cities.

John Dartnell from Envirosustain.com.au has documented a few issues around the world and with Australia in particular, the following areas:

– Freshwater per person (it’s the most important scarce resource locally)

– Arable land per person (which together with water leads to food problems)

– Oil (affecting agricultural machines, refrigeration, transport)

Other notable findings have been in relation to countries on the Equator – such as Saudi Arabia, China and India, who are buying up land in other countries to export food back to their own countries, mostly in South America and Africa causing much social unrest.

Saudi Arabia is in crisis as the first country to declare it’s out of water – sucking up all the water from even its non-replenishing deep aquifers.

The Himalayan glaciers are melting and these feed the Ganges, the Indus, the Yellow River, the Yangtze, the Pearl, the Mekong and the Irrawaddy affecting around 3 billion people.

Not to mention that India has a serious problem with its’ wells drying up.

Our oceans might be rising but our groundwater is falling, we need to take note.
